Blood Pressure & Hypertension

    The concern that resistance training raises blood pressure has been largely reversed by the trial evidence. Meta-analyses of randomized controlled trials report reductions in resting systolic and diastolic pressure following progressive resistance exercise programs.

    A systematic review and meta-analysis published in Scientific Reports examined strength training specifically as a treatment for arterial hypertension and found significant reductions across intervention groups. Earlier work demonstrated normalization of resting blood pressure in adults aged 65 to 73 with high-normal readings.

    Acute hemodynamic studies in borderline hypertensive subjects help explain why: circuit-style resistance work produces transient pressure elevations during effort that resolve rapidly, while the chronic adaptation trends downward.

    The clinical implication is that resistance training can generally be prescribed in controlled hypertension, provided intensity is supervised, breath-holding is avoided, and the patient's physician has cleared exercise participation.
