    Aging research has moved from describing decline to identifying which parts of it are reversible. Skeletal muscle is one of the clearest examples: gene expression profiles in aged muscle differ measurably from young muscle, and a well-known study found that six months of progressive resistance training shifted a substantial portion of that transcriptional signature back toward a younger profile.

    Muscle mass itself carries prognostic weight. Cohort data link muscle mass index to all-cause mortality in older adults, and low muscle mass is associated with poorer outcomes across surgical, oncologic, and general medical care pathways.

    More recent work has extended the picture beyond muscle. A 2023 trial reported that resistance training reduced circulating inflammatory factors and enhanced dermal extracellular matrix components — a measurable effect of loading on skin aging.

    Taken together, these findings support framing resistance training as a systemic intervention rather than a musculoskeletal one, and support the value of starting it well before functional decline is clinically apparent.
